The City of Waterloo is one of Canada’s economic development success stories ...

We are a centre of growth and entrepreneurship that has succeeded in adapting to an ever-changing economy.

Waterloo has a unique and diverse ecosystem like no other Canadian city. We are home to many major employers, global think tanks, the country’s leading finance and insurance companies, and world renowned post-secondary institutions.

There are significant job openings in Waterloo, and according to there are over 5,000 jobs posted within 25km of the city. There are currently over 1,000 postings in the over 800 tech companies that exist within the region. In 2012, 1,600 tech jobs were created within our Region.

It's no secret that we are known the world-over for our expertise in technology. So much is being accomplished right here in our backyard - from the invention of the BlackBerry to the largest independent provider of enterprise content management in the world, to the launch of over 1,000 startups since 2009 - we boast a wealth of talent at our fingertips and more startup activity than anywhere else in Canada.

Waterloo is home to prominent insurance and financial institutions employing over 6,000 people and our post-secondary institutions employ over 7,000 people.

As a region, 20% of our businesses are manufacturing-based making our community the second most manufacturing-intensive economy in Canada. This is demonstrated locally – during the last five years, Waterloo has experienced $500 million in new industrial construction and expansion across the city – with companies like Aeryon Labs, Kraus Carpets, Fischer Canada, Virtek, and Teledyne DALSA leading the way.

Our diverse economic base is the cornerstone of our success and we will capitalize upon that as we face the future head-on with new approaches and solutions to emerging challenges.
