Centre for International Governance Innovation

The former Seagram Museum, in uptown Waterloo, is home to the Centre for International Governance Innovation (CIGI), a research centre created through a blend of public and private donations.

CIGI was established in 2002, with initial funding provided by co-CEOs of BlackBerry Jim Balsillie and Mike Lazaridis, and supporting funding from the federal and provincial government.

CIGI addresses the need for an institution to study, advise and educate scholars, practitioners and governments on the character and desired reforms to the system of multilateral governance, particularly within the economic and financial area. CIGI is an international centre of excellence contributing significantly to the understanding and evolution of the international, economic and financial system. In addition to its research and policy development functions, the Centre will deliver a unique form of training to junior and mid-level academics and practitioners (including many from developing countries) through a blend of workshops, seminars and information interaction.
